Newton Abbot College is a Specialist Technology College, first designated in 1994. Design and technology activities for an integral and important part of college life for majority of our students. There are seven fully equipped specialist workshops within the curriculum area. Students have a wide and exciting variety of resources available to use from the new technologies of computer aided design & manufacture to the more traditional machinery associated the manufacture of high quality outcomes. Practical activities form the heart of subject – students are encouraged to be innovative in their designs, sensitive in manufacture and objective in evaluating their end products. Health and safety forms an integral part of this work. In years 7-9 students participate in a range of design and technology experiences which will provide them with the knowledge and understanding needed to design and make quality products. The areas of study include Electronics, Food Technology, Graphic Products, Mechanisms, Resistant Materials, Structures and Textile Technology. At the end of Year 9 students choose one 3 pathways:
- GCSE Product Design (ICCA/ CCEA)
- GCSE Catering (WJEB)
- BTEC First Certificate in Engineering (Double Award)
In KS5 students can further extend their interest in D&T:
- GCE Product Design (WJEB)
- GCE Product Design: Textiles (AQA)
- NVQ Motor Vehicle maintenance
Outside the curriculum there a tradition of student participation in exciting activities: Two land yachts and a hovercraft have recent been constructed in the workshops. At present there are two electric cars in production! Students take part in The Marine Challenge (2006 winners of the electric and petrol competitions), Plymouth University Challenge Days, Engineering Education Scheme, Rotary Young Technologist, Young Chef of the Year, STEM activity days, Lego League…. There are technology clubs to enhance coursework and promote design and technology capability. Strong commercial / industrial links are evident throughout the curriculum ranging from visits to local industry such as Centrax to top local chefs such as Steve Mabbutt judging our year 9 Cookies Competition.
