Students at Newton Abbot College have four lessons of English per week. Generally, we teach English in mixed ability groups although, in some year groups, students are set according to ability.

At Key Stage 4, students undertake an English language and Literature B.C. course using the AQA Specification. Details of this course, including mark schemes and past papers, can be found at www.aqa.org.uk

At Key Stage 5, we offer a Language and a Literature "A" Level - also using the AQA Specification.

English is taught in six dedicated teaching rooms. These rooms are equipped with data projectors that allow us to deliver lessons that are interactive, paced and well structured.

As our curriculum map shows, students study a range of texts and write in a range of styles. We are committed to supporting students so that they progress, through achievable target setting, in order to become independent learners.

We use materials and resources that are relevant to the lives and understanding of out students. We also take advantage of opportunities to use film and multi-modal texts, as well as drama and other cross-curricular collaborations, to enhance learning.

Having said this, we feel English offers many opportunities to expose students to the global community in which we live. Diversity and difference are celebrated in English particularly through the study of texts from other cultures.

The teaching of English at Newton Abbot College is underpinned by the explicit "unpicking" of assessment criteria. We endeavour to "demystify" how the students are to be assessed so that the have greater ownership of their learning. Furthermore we welcome student feedback and are open to new ways in which to engage our students so that their experience of English is positive and a good preparation for the world of work.
