Staff & GovernorsJob titleAppointed GovernorContact number01626 367 335

After graduating, Barry Reeves worked as a volunteer teacher in Malawi where his passion for education and training was kindled. On his return, he helped establish an innovative scheme for unemployed, inner city young people, which became the prototype for government programmes for the next decade.

Upon moving to Devon, Barry set up a TV-led programme for unemployed young people and start-up businesses in the west country; the first use of social broadcasting. Two years in Papua New Guinea as Director of Non-Formal Education cemented his interest in international development work.

The following 10 years saw Barry establishing and managing Dartington Tech, providing accredited skills training for 550 young people and adults from all over Devon. He then directed, for 5 years, an Open University programme aimed at improving management skills in small businesses and the voluntary sector.

For the last 15 years he has worked extensively in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region managing large education reform programmes in South Africa and the Solomon Islands, as well as a consultant to many ministries of education and their school systems. Wherever he has worked the key objective has been to improve the quality and relevance of young people’s schooling that is so vital to everyone’s future.

Barry is very much looking forward to using his experience to contribute towards the sound governance of Newton Abbot College.
