3 peaks success

On 6 – 7 July eleven students and two members of staff from Newton Abbot College took part in the 3 Peaks Challenge.  The challenge was to climb the 3 highest peaks in England (Scafell Pike 978m), Wales (Snowdon 1085m) and Scotland (Ben Nevis 1344m) within 24 hours!  After months of intense training on Dartmoor they were ready to take on this epic challenge all in the name of the College’s charity of the year, Rowcroft Hospice. Starting on Sunday 6 July, the team headed off and spent 13 gruelling hours travelling in the minibus to Scotland ready to tackle the first part of the challenge.  At 4.00pm on Monday 7 July they began climbing the first peak, Ben Nevis.  By 8.00am the following morning they had moved on to England and were halfway down Scafell Pike.  27 hours after they started the team had climbed Snowdon and completed the challenge. The 3 Peaks team set themselves an overall target to raise £10,000 for Rowcroft Hospice and they are well on their way to achieving this with the total to date exceeding £7,000.  The final total will be revealed in September once all donations have been collected and counted. Everybody involved in the challenge said it was an amazing experience and the memories will last them a lifetime!  Callum Duggan said “3 Peaks was an opportunity that I knew I had to take.  It was the toughest challenge of my life so far but equally it made me realise how far I could push myself physically.  I hope to take part in similar challenges again in the future.”  Despite finishing the challenge exhausted, hurting and sleep deprived, Loren Smith said “We have raised a huge amount of money for a fantastic charity and I wouldn’t have changed a thing.” [caption id="attachment_6731" align="aligncenter" width="495"]The team walking through the snow as they approached the summit of Ben Nevis, Scotland.
