Year 8 student, Adam Alderton, has recently competed in the National Brass Band Championships, held in Cheltenham earlier this month.
Adam, a talented percussionist, plays in the Sidmouth Town Band who are currently ranked second highest Brass Band in Devon. His talents on the xylophone secured his spot as one of the band’s three musician-strong percussion team.
Following the band’s incredible first place in the regional Brass Band Finals held in March, they qualified for the National Championships on Sunday 15 September. Competing against the top 18, second section brass bands in the country, Adam helped the band finish in an amazing third place overall.
“First of all, I started off with drum lessons.” Said Adam “then I looked at what other percussion instruments were on offer and found the xylophone. Playing the xylophone makes me feel good about myself; I have a skill that I am passionate about and I want to keep getting better. I can’t wait for next year’s regionals!”
College Head of Music and Performing Arts, Rob Wilkinson said: “This is an outstanding achievement for one of our rising musical stars in our College community. Adam has a real determination about his music and is a regular on the Newton Abbot College stage, showing off his talents. We are always very excited to hear about any student’s achievement outside of College life; we couldn’t be prouder of him and can’t wait to see how his musicianship develops in the coming months and years.”
