Caring sisters crowned local heroes

College siblings, Amelia and Sammie-Jo Mason, were awarded the ‘Child of Courage’ award at The Breeze Local Heroes event held in Torquay recently.

The ceremony, held at the TLH Victoria Hotel, recognises the efforts of individuals in the local area who have been nominated for their work with others and the local community in ten categories including ‘Young Person of the Year’ and ‘Bravery Award’.

Amelia and Sammie-Jo, aged 14 and 12 respectively, were nominated for the ‘Child of Courage’ award for their work as young carers, helping to look after both their parents on a daily basis.

“We had no idea that we were going to win the award before we arrived at the ceremony” said Amelia, “It felt really good to win; you feel like you have been noticed for something that goes on behind closed doors and it makes you feel really good inside.”

The sisters’ College Tutor, Rob Wilkinson, was thrilled for the pair: “I am extremely proud of Amelia and Sammie-Jo for all of their incredible work, both inside and out of the College environment. To be able to dedicate so much time to care for their parents, as well as keeping on top of College life and the demands it brings, is truly inspirational. I could not be happier for them and their award; this is something that they truly deserve.”
