Miss Grierson joins the College following a remarkable career in both education and government organisation settings. Raised in Coventry, Miss Grierson travelled to Leicester University after completion of her A Level studies to read Psychology and Sociology. Upon completion of her PGCE, she returned to Coventry to work for seven years in primary education as an early years’ specialist. Moving to the secondary education sector, Miss Grierson became Head of Psychology at President Kennedy School in Coventry before moving to Coventry Blue Coat Church of England School to take up the post of Head of Psychology, PSHE and Citizenship. It was in this post, in 2006, that she received the Advanced Skills Teacher Award, an accolade awarded for excellence in classroom teaching practice.

Moving away from the classroom, Miss Grierson worked for Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency, helping maintain and develop the national curriculum and associated assessments before moving to Bristol to take up the position of Assistant Principal at Cabot Learning Federation. In 2011, Miss Grierson also successfully completed a National Professional Qualification for Headship.

Furthering her own studies, Miss Grierson completed a Masters at Warwick University, focusing on gender difference in post 16 education. It is this passion for post-16 education that drew her to the position at Newton Abbot College: “I am passionate about delivering an enriching post-16 educative experience for all learners at Newton Abbot College. We will be ensuring that the quality of teaching and learning is progressive and delivered in a passionate and engaging way.” Miss Grierson’s decision to apply for the College position was also driven by the welcome that her daughter received, joining the College for her own Sixth Form education: “The College made her feel so welcome, safe and at home. I was extremely happy with the experience as a parent. My daughter felt safe and happy in College and Newton Abbot College set the model I live passionately by. As the Head of Sixth Form, I will be ensuring that students have an enriching experience at Newton Abbot College; that they have a voice and are enabled to take risks, grow and develop and ultimately learn in an enthusiastic way.”NEwton Abbot College OFsted Good Secondary School Miss Sam Grierson and Principal Paul Cornish

It was immediately apparent from Miss Grierson’s application that she has excelled in both. I am determined that Newton Abbot College will provide excellent education provision for all students from ages 11 to 19 and am confident that Miss Grierson will deliver standards in post-16 provision that continue to make us the Sixth Form of choice in the local area.”
