College Highly Commended in Biology Olympiad

Year 12 and 13 A Level Biology students recently competed against 7,500 students across the UK in the British Biology Olympiad organized by the Royal Society of Biology.

Students sat two gruelling one hour, multiple choice papers. The Olympiad challenges students to apply their existing knowledge to new scenarios both within and outside of their A Level Biology knowledge.  The College was thrilled with the participants’ results; six students received commendations for their efforts, with Bethan Sadler receiving a high commendation and Year 13 student, Lauren Stent, receiving a Bronze Award.

Year 13 student, Wyn Firth, enjoyed the opportunity: “Despite there being tough questions we hadn’t seen before, the Olympiad was a really rewarding experience. The teaching and learning we receive at Newton Abbot College allowed us to make confident choices in areas in which we would have otherwise been unsure. It was a great opportunity to have once again taken part in the Olympiad; students are encouraged to include their achievements on their UCAS personal statements which will help with the application process on to further education.”

Teacher of Science, Alicia Wideman, was impressed with the students’ achievements: “Students enthusiastically applied themselves to the challenge, experiencing notable success. It was fantastic to see students taking an interest in furthering their exam skills by pushing themselves to apply their newly acquired knowledge in lessons to a scenario outside of the examination process.”
