College Netball Stars qualify for National Finals

Year 11 students, Holly Flory and Meg Benefer, are celebrating following their netball team’s triumph at the regional play offs last month.

The Under 16 Spartans team from Teignbridge Titans Netball Club travelled to Clifton College Sports Centre in March to face three other teams to attempt to secure a place in the National Finals due to be held in late April.

Their play-off opportunity came after an incredible season with the team; having qualified for Division 1 earlier in the year, the Spartans began the season with mixed results. Their fortunes changed when they beat the undefeated Hucklecoat Flames from Gloucester who successfully qualified for the national finals in 2016. The game’s result precipitated an undefeated record for the Spartans for the rest of the season, placing them third in the overall Division 1 table and qualifying them for regional play offs.

Of the four teams playing (Team Jets from Jersey, Team Bath, Hucklecoat Flames and Teignbridge Spartans) only two would qualify for the national finals. In a nail-biting finish, the Spartans secured victory against Bath in their last match, joining the Hucklecoat Flames at the National Finals. The finals will see the top 18 Under 16 teams in the country come together to compete for the overall national title and will be held at Redbridge Spots Centre in Essex on 29 and 30 April.

Year 11 Holly could not have been more thrilled with the result: “We were, both individually and as a team, amazed to have qualified for the finals and it has taken some time to really sink in. It is incredible to think that we have fought through as the underdogs; the Hucklecoat Flames came fifth in the finals last year; to have beaten them this season is a massive achievement.”

Chantal Greep, member of the College’s Physical Education Department and netball coach said of the achievement: “It is always fantastic to see the incredible achievements Newton Abbot College’s students make both inside and out of the College environment. I couldn’t be happier for these incredibly gifted players; we are, both as a department and a College, extremely proud of Holly and Meg and we cannot wait to see how far they progress in the national finals later on in the month.”
