Newton Abbot College are celebrating their qualification for the County Athletics finals due to be held later this month.
On 5 February, two teams of young athletes in years 7 & 8 competed in the South Devon Indoor athletics competition held at Seale Hayne. Students faced a rigorous round of field disciplines including triple jump, long jump, turbo javelin throw and chest throw before competing in a series of relay events and individual timed performances at the end of the competition.
The College’s year 7 team put on a strong display, being placed third overall behind Teignmouth Community School. The year 8 team dominated the competition, winning every discipline and race, scoring maximum points. The results saw them qualify for the county finals due to be held at the Plymouth Life Centre on Thursday 22 February, where they will compete against the strongest athletics teams in Devon.
Team Leader of Physical Education, Jamie Salter, said of the results: “Once again, our students have put in a top class performance, coming out with a fantastic first and third place in the competition. Our qualification to the county finals will allow our students to experience competition at a higher level; I am excited to see where their raw talent and dedication to their sport will place them in the upcoming finals.”
