Newton Abbot College are the top U13 athletics team in the Torbay area following their performance at the County Athletics final held at Plymouth Life Centre on Thursday 22 February.
The team, comprising year 7 and 8 students, competed in a range of track and field events, including shotput, standing triple jump, speed bounce and individual and group relays. They faced competition from fifteen other teams from across the county, with individual athletes taking part in three track and three field events before points were pooled to create an overall score.
Newton Abbot College beat all other Torbay schools, being placed 7th in the county for their performance. The overall winners, Braunton School were followed closely by Devonport High Schools’ team and Ivybridge Community College, who came third.
Head of Physical Education, Jamie Salter, was thrilled with the result: “The performance shown by our young athletes was outstanding. To have qualified as one of the top sixteen teams in the county was achievement enough; to have beaten all other teams in the area to secure seventh place is phenomenal. This placing is the best result the College has ever seen and our young athletes should be extremely proud of their performance. We are looking forward to seeing how this talented team progresses in future years.”
