College sees change on horizon for mental health awareness

Newton Abbot College welcomed Horizon Counselling Services on 15 November as part of their PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) provision for the academic year.

Clinical Hypnotherapist and Counsellor, Alan Stokes, ran a series of sessions throughout the day, speaking to students in Years 7, 11 and Sixth Form about his journey into Mental Health provision, the effects of stress on everyday life and tips to deal with anxiety and stress within the College environment and beyond. Students attended presentations and tailored workshops to help identify areas of pressure in their lives, before discussing what they could do to effectively manage them.

The spotlight on mental health is particularly pertinent this year, as the College’s chosen charity is Place2Be, a national charity providing emotional support to children in schools and colleges across the country.

Enrichment Day organiser and Teacher of Geography, David Evans, explains the importance of such a visit: “We are extremely grateful to Alan for coming in and sharing his expertise and knowledge with our student cohort. Understanding the pressures and stresses that face our young people and recognising their potential impact is something we are, as a College, completely committed to. Alan’s visit is just the beginning of a whole process to raise awareness of the mental health issues faced by young people and to equip our students with the life skills to deal with them to allow them to reach their potential as young adults.”

Alan Stokes from Horizon Counselling added “I would like to thank Newton Abbot College for inviting me to share their day. I was impressed with all the staff and students and how they engaged in raising their awareness of the importance of emotional health and well-being and how the College is taking a proactive approach in supporting their students. The College and its staff should be congratulated on their forward-thinking attitude and for supporting the students in this way. I look forward to working with the College and the students again in the future.”
