Newton Abbot College’s all-female skiing team has been crowned Senior School winners at the Devon County Championships held at Torquay Alpine Ski Club on 17 November.
The talented trio, comprising sisters Izzy and Jasmine Drew and Year 9 student, Ellie Brooks, who were placed 5th overall in last year’s competition, competed in the slalom event both individually and as a team. Eighteen other schools and Colleges were involved in the event, which saw the fastest individual times of each group member used to calculate an overall team total as well as individual results after two runs down the slope.
An incredible second run from all three skiers recorded medal winning positions for each of them; Izzy Drew was placed first in the 14-15 year old category with a time of 10.03 seconds, recording the third fastest overall time. This performance also saw her crowned Devon Girls County Champion. Ellie Brooks was equally impressive, placing first in the 12-13 year old category with a time of 10.04 seconds; just 0.01 seconds off Izzy’s overall title time. Izzy’s younger sister Jasmine completed the winning trio’s medal haul with a third place finish in the 12-13 year old category with a time of 11.22 seconds, making her the sixth fastest girl in the competition with a twelfth place overall time.
Newton Abbot College Teacher of Physical Education and Ski Team coach, Charlotte Tonge said: “This performance was beyond impressive from all three girls. They were all somewhat disappointed with their first run times which left us outside of the medal places in fourth position. However, their second run times were phenomenal, with each of them almost knocking a second off their original time. I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts and what an accolade to get Newton Abbot College’s name on the trophy; the first time since the trophy was first presented in 1997.”
