The College’s Electric Car Club have taken their vehicle ‘Lucy’ for a spin at Castle Combe Circuit to take part in a race against other schools and colleges across the region.
The seven-strong student team took turns to complete practice laps and compete in races, as well as carrying out maintenance checks and repairs as necessary. ‘Lucy’ is one of two electric cars at Newton Abbot College; the newer vehicle ‘Freddie’ is currently under construction, with the hope of competing in the future.
Despite being one of the few cars to compete without breaking down, ‘Lucy’ was showing her age (having been originally designed and constructed in the early 2000s) and finished well down the field.
Year 10 Club member and only female representative, Callie Butler, said of the day: “It was very exciting competing against other schools and colleges; Lucy can achieve speeds of up to 35mph, so it was fantastic to take her out on the track. It is amazing to have the opportunity at Newton Abbot College to get involved in something completely different; the club also boasts a hovercraft which we regularly take out for a spin!”
