Newton Abbot College’s year 10 student, Megan Heath, is celebrating her recent selection success for Devon County Rugby. Following a gruelling seven hour selection process in September, Megan was successfully chosen out of 61 hopefuls for the 28-strong county squad. A relative newcomer to the sport, Megan’s meteoric rise through the ranks is attributed in no small part to her dedication to the game; training three times a week, competing in weekend matches and helping coach fellow students at Newton Abbot College. Starting playing only two years ago, Megan’s talent and dedication has seen her progress rapidly on the rugby pitch and she is thrilled to have been selected: ‘I am extremely happy to be representing my sport at County level. I was encouraged to get involved in rugby by my teachers at Newton Abbot College; their belief in me and encouragement has been incredibly influential. I am passionate about redefining the stereotypes of women in sport and can’t wait to get on the County pitch in the coming weeks!’ PE Teacher, Mr Ian Patchett, is equally thrilled at the selection success ‘Megan is an outstanding sports student with a huge enthusiasm for rugby. Despite only playing for two years, Megan has shown a natural talent and flair for the sport. She has subsequently gone from strength to strength and is a real role model to her fellow students at Newton Abbot College.’ The weekend of 21/22 November will herald the first of her county fixtures, an inter-county festival meet in Frome involving teams from Cornwall, Somerset, Buckinghamshire and Dorset.
