Nine Year 12 Newton Abbot College Performing Arts students wowed audiences with their incredible student-devised show ‘Eurovision Goes Musical’ on 27 November.
The performance, which included huge musical numbers from shows such as ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Billy Elliot, ‘Walking on Sunshine’ and ‘Cabaret’ was devised to showcase performances from different European countries in the style of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Students covered all specialisms of the performing arts with dramatic monologues, dance numbers and vocal renditions thrilling the audience filled with students, family and friends. In true ‘Eurovision’ style, after the performances had ended, the audience voted on their favourite number, which was performed once again for the encore. ‘Mamma Mia’ was the clear favourite and ended the impressive performance.
Performing Arts student, Katie Williams, said of the evening’s entertainment: “It was a brilliant experience performing with our whole class; all of our hard work came together in what was a fantastic show. We are lucky to have some international students with us on our course and the concept for the performance came from wanting to make them feel included and part of the Performing Arts family. Performing Arts is a fantastically welcoming subject and really encourages people to embrace their personalities and express who they are through their chosen art forms.”
Teacher of Performing Arts and Dance, Sarah Wilkinson, was thrilled with the students’ work: “The level of talent displayed by our students was breath taking. The level of concentration, drive and professionalism that was shown was incredible; they should all be very proud of themselves!”
