Year 11 Newton Abbot College prefect, Willow Bryant, is celebrating following the inclusion of her most recent poem, ‘Dear Mum…’ in the newly released anthology ‘SuperMums – One in a Million.’
Willow’s most recent offering will mark the fifth time the talented writer has had her work published. Her first work, a poem entitled ‘The World War Two History Mystery’ was included in an anthology when she was only nine years old.
Since then, her poetry has garnered praise from both her College teachers and outside publishing houses. Willow’s latest work ‘Dear Mum…’ was originally written as a Mother’s Day present, inspired by the positive relationship she has with her mother, before submitting it to the anthology to be enjoyed by a wider audience.
“It is quite overwhelming thinking about being published five times.” The young writer explains, “I write because I love writing and people’s encouragement has made me want to continue. I spent a few days perfecting ‘Dear Mum…’ before I gave it to her; poetry, for me, has to have meaning behind it and I have to care about the subject about which I am writing. Poetry is a fantastic way to express your feelings in a creative way and I would recommend it to anyone.”
Teacher of English at the College, Rebecca Knibb, could not be happier for Willow: “Willow excels in English with her command of language. She has developed her skills and taken them out of the classroom, producing some wonderful fiction and poetry. I am really proud of the way she has embraced the College’s ethos and not just imagined what’s possible…but made it reality.”
