Funding Cuts Addressed During MP Visit

The College welcomed Conservative MP Anne Marie Morris on Friday 23 June, meeting with both College Principal, Paul Cornish, staff and students.

Following Ms Morris’s successful campaign during the recent general election, she was keen to visit the College, one of the largest education establishments in her constituency, to take a tour of the facilities, meet with staff and students and discuss the education funding cuts faced by schools and colleges both locally and nationally.

“Newton Abbot College was pleased to receive Anne Marie Morris.” Explains Principal Paul Cornish, “Even before the general election, Ms Morris has been supportive of head teachers and wrote to Secretary of State for Education, Justine Greening, to appeal for a fairer deal for education funding and Devon schools. We spoke at length about the real issues behind the current funding crisis and I feel as though Ms Morris had a true understanding of the issues we face on a daily basis in education establishments.”

Mr Cornish took the time during her visit to thank Ms Morris for her support from before the general election, adding: “I am always proud to show visitors around Newton Abbot College; proud of our students and staff and everything the College has achieved. We are committed to driving through improvements in the coming years, but as with all Principals and Head Teachers across the country, it is becoming increasingly hard to implement real and positive change when you are facing huge real term cuts in funding.”

Ms Morris commented" it is always a pleasure to visit schools in my area, and I am always impressed at the quality of teaching, learning and pastoral care provided. The students at Newton Abbot College were very polite and looked proud of their school in their neat school uniform. As a former governor, I was delighted to see so much progress, such well maintained buildings, and students and teachers achieving despite the funding challenges. Make no mistake however; this funding formula must change to give our schools and our children the funding they need and deserve.”
