Year 12 Newton Abbot College student, Billy Green, has been crowned world champion at the Federation of International Motorcycling Trial GP World Championship finals held in Arco di Trento in Italy on 16 September.
The sport, involving riding over a series of obstacles without stopping or putting feet on the ground, requires high levels of balance, strength and focus, with the winner having scored the least number of marks.
Billy secured the Trial 125 title at just sixteen years old, competing against fourteen other competitors aged 14-21. Throughout the championship, Billy has travelled all over the world competing, with his trials taking him to countries such as Spain, Andorra, Portugal and Japan.
His prolific rise to the top has seen him securing other titles; most notably as the Teignbridge Junior Sportsman of the Year in 2015.
“It’s amazing to be World Champion, although I was disappointed to have not secured a trial win in Italy. I will be moving up into the Trial 2 World Championship next year; ultimately, I would like to achieve my goal of being a full time Motorbike Trials rider. It is fantastic to have a family, College and friends who are so supportive of my sport.”
College representative, Sam Groves, said of the win: “Billy’s achievement is incredible, but no less than this talented young man deserves. To be the best in the world is such a huge accolade; we could not be prouder of Billy and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
