Hannah on the Pathway to England Rugby Success

Year 11 Newton Abbot College rugby player, Hannah Hughes, has recently been selected by the Rugby Football Union to attend the England Centre of Excellence programme on the England Pathway.

The talented fifteen year old number 8 player, who is a member of Paignton RFC and represents her sport at county level, was nominated for assessment by her Devon U15 coach to attend a selection day in Weston Super Mare earlier in the year. Hannah, who has only been involved in the sport for three years, will now train with England coaches for 8-10 hours a month, with the hope of one day representing the country on the rugby pitch.

This was not her first taste of success; last season, Hannah won the coveted Paignton RFU U15 ‘Players’ Player of the Year’ award.

Hannah said of her selection: “I am really pleased to have been selected for the England Pathway; I am so proud to be representing women’s rugby; as a lesser known sport, I would like to be a great ambassador for the game. I am hoping to one day play for England and become a professional rugby player; something I couldn’t do without the support of my family, club and Newton Abbot College.”

Team Leader of Physical Education, Jamie Salter, said of Hannah’s achievement: “As Team Leader of Physical Education, it is fantastic to see that all the hard work Hannah has put in over the years is paying off. To get recognised at this age by England is simply amazing. The real hard work now starts and I’m sure with Hannah’s commitment and focus she has the potential to go all the way. Well done Hannah; everyone at Newton Abbot College is very proud of you!”
