Thirteen year old Year 9 student, Ben Cornish, has beaten hundreds of contestants to be selected as one of only sixty hopefuls appearing on Sky Arts’ brand new show ‘Guitar Star’. Talented student Ben appeared in the series’ first episode aired on 9th June, showcasing his skills in front of fellow contestants and guitar experts Nitin Sawhney, Helen Sanderson and Huey Morgan of Fun Lovin’ Criminals. Sawnhey said of Ben’s intricate and powerful performance ‘For me that was rhythmically the tightest I have seen today.’ The second episode, aired on 16th June, saw the judges pick only four contestants from each category to continue on to the heats. The judges were unanimous in their decision to send Ben straight through to the next stage; where hopefuls will be mentored by some of the biggest names in the rock world. Tony Iommi (of Black Sabbath fame) will oversee the Newton Abbot College hopeful’s journey towards the overall prize of a performance in front of 30,000 people on the main stage at Latitude Festival in Henham Park, Suffolk. Rob Wilkinson, Music Team Leader here at Newton Abbot College, says: ‘Ben is a very keen and talented musician; always striving for perfection, practising until he reaches his goals. Newton Abbot College is extremely proud of his achievements and we wish him the very best of luck for the remainder of the competition.’ Follow Ben’s progress through the competition on Sky Arts on Tuesdays at 8pm.
