Newton Abbot College Students Excel in new ‘Tougher’ GCSEs

Students at Newton Abbot College were in buoyant mood yet again as they picked up their GCSE results.

Against a national backdrop of uncertainty and concern, regarding the government’s new ‘tougher’ GCSEs, the College has performed exceptionally well.

College Principal, Paul Cornish, remarked “Like all Heads I awaited these results with anticipation.  There is a great deal of volatility in the system this year but my staff and students have shown that they are more than up to the challenge.  We have matched last year’s results, which were the best the College had ever known, in the only comparable measure – with just over 70% of our students gaining 5A*-C including English and Maths.  I could not be more proud!”.

Of particular interest this year was the newly introduced ‘9’ grade in English and Mathematics.  The equivalent of an A** in old money, there was a great deal of talk nationally as to how few students across the country would achieve this new ‘super grade’.  Newton Abbot College had no fewer than seven students achieve at this phenomenally high standard in this year’s qualifications.  With two of those seven students achieving two grade 9s each.

Chair of Governors, Steve Joint, commented “It has been a highly successful year for the College.  When you look across all results achieved this summer, in the Sixth Form and Year 11, you cannot fail to be impressed.”  He added, “The College leadership are doing a cracking job of taking this school from strength to strength.”

This is amazing.....insane....I am totally in shock! So many people have worked so hard to get us all through our exams. Thank you to all the staff at Newton Abbot College - they are amazing!
