Ofsted 2014 its all good

Ofsted inspectors have once again given the seal of approval to students and staff of Newton Abbot College, all of the elements of which they judge to be good. Though the bar has recently been raised with an even more rigorous inspection process implemented, inspectors found much to praise in the College, where students “make good progress and reach above-average standards by the end of year 11.” The sixth form is also described as good, with students receiving “the high-quality guidance they need to decide upon their future education, training or employment.” Students’ “spiritual, moral, social and cultural development” is, according to the Ofsted team “promoted exceptionally well” and student achievement is good. The core subjects of English and Mathematics come in for special mention: students are described as making “rapid progress, above the national average.” Principal Gareth Davies said: “I think that this is a very fair description of the College. The inspectors correctly saw the very good progress which students make in their learning and they clearly liked the atmosphere of the College. The report says that they found the students calm, polite, courteous and fun to talk to. I feel just the same. We shall be congratulating the students for the fantastic impression which they made on the inspection team.” [caption id="attachment_6350" align="aligncenter" width="500"]Principal Gareth Davies with Vicky Groves, Loren Smith, Adam Brenton and Tom Davis Principal Gareth Davies with Vicky Groves, Loren Smith, Adam Brenton and Tom Davis[/caption] The report identifies two improvement areas: to improve students’ achievement in history and modern foreign languages; and to improve the quality of teaching from good to outstanding. Mr Davies commented: “The inspectors’ recommendations for improvement are spot-on. We have identified the same action points for ourselves, but it is good to have an external view which vindicates our own judgement. We shall use this report to ensure that Newton Abbot College soon achieves our firm intention to be outstanding in all we do.”
