The College has announced a record-breaking funding total for the 2016-17 academic year.
Following a series of staff and student-led events, including sponsored swims, Christmas Fayres, non-uniform days, prize raffles and much more, the College announced its grand total of £10,563.47 that will be donated to Torbay Special Care Baby Unit. Exceeding the £10,000 target set at the beginning of October 2016, the total marks the largest amount the College has ever raised for charity in an academic year.
The total amount raised was announced to students in a series of dedicated assemblies; Special Care Baby Unit representatives Karen Green and Unit Sister Melissa Last joined the College’s Curie House on Tuesday 3 October to learn more about the College’s efforts and to formally accept the cheque. The money raised will be put towards the creation of a room dedicated to families transitioning from the unit to home after treatment. It is hoped that the room will allow families to come together and look after their babies on their own or with support from staff 24-48 hours before heading home.
Karen Green was delighted with the total: “Wow! What an incredible total. Thanks to everyone for all their hard work. So much has been done to raise the money but it looks like a lot of fun was had raising it. This amazing amount of money will help provide somewhere for our parents to escape to from the intense environment of the unit, helping families to come together before they take the step to leave the unit permanently.”
Assistant Principal and fundraising lead, Katherine West, was equally thrilled: “We are so proud of every single student who has helped contribute to this enormous amount of money raised. Fundraising for charity is engrained in the College’s ethos and making a difference in our local and national community is extremely important. Torbay Special Care Baby Unit provided amazing care for one of our members of staff and her daughter following her birth over a year ago; it is wonderful to think that our students’ efforts will go towards making a difference in the lives of so many families going forward.”
