Rising to the challenge

Sam Daly, a Year 11 student at Newton Abbot College, recently attended trials for the Exeter Chief’s Youth Academy. The Exeter Chief’s Rugby Club is based at Sandy Park, Exeter and their Rugby Academy is based at Bicton College, Exeter. The College is currently gaining national recognition for its programme which covers the whole aspect of professional rugby, whilst Exeter Chief’s players were recently called up for England in the Six Nations. Sam currently plays for the U18 Devon rugby squad and was amongst 140 boys invited to attend the Academy, all hoping to be selected for one of the few places available for the next academic year.  The Exeter Chief’s current players were told to be extra ‘aggressive’ to all those attending the trials to see if they could handle the step up to professional level.  Sam described the trial as “the hardest training session I have ever done”. As a result of Sam’s hard work on the day, he achieved recognition and was awarded a place at the Academy at Bicton College and starts in September 2014.
