Sixth Formers Warm the Heart of the Community

A group of College Sixth Formers recently welcomed residents from Southlands Life Care Retirement Home to take part in the College’s inaugural ‘Winter Warmer’ event.

Residents were invited to the College’s Sixth Form café to meet with students as part of their Public Services course and Leadership programme. Event leader and Year 13 student, Megan Johns, headed up the afternoon that saw residents enjoying lunch, a musical interlude provided by students and a game of bingo with donated prizes.

It is hoped that similar afternoons inviting members of the local community to the College will become a regular feature in the calendar.

Life Care resident, Bernie Price, enjoyed her time at the College: “It has been an absolutely fabulous afternoon at Newton Abbot College and couldn’t be bettered. The food, atmosphere and the way we were treated by the students was superb. The students being themselves, spending time with us and creating a lovely atmosphere has been the best part of the day.”

Year 13 student, Megan Johns, was equally pleased with the day: “It was great to speak to the residents and find out about their lives. I think it is incredibly important to interact with members of the local community. It was a great privilege to get to know about their lives and experiences and hopefully we can do more events like this in the future.”
