Newton Abbot College’s newly-formed Ski Team has beaten a host of other schools and colleges in Devon to come fifth in the County Championships.
The competition, held on 4 November at the Torquay Alpine Ski Club, saw the team (comprising Archie Brooks, Ellie Brooks, Jasmine Drew and Sam Medland-Gray) compete against over twenty five other schools in the individual slalom. Despite the extremely challenging weather conditions, the team secured a first place, two second places and a third in their respective age groups, finishing only 0.09 seconds behind the team in fourth place.
Following the team’s success, they have qualified for the South West Regional Skiing Championships that are due to be held in Gloucester in May.
Teacher of Physical Education and Ski Team leader, Charlotte Tonge, said: “We are so impressed with our ski team’s first ever championship result. Despite a few falls, our students showed great resilience, getting up, fighting and still producing a fifth place result. It is exciting to diversify the Physical Education provision at Newton Abbot College and engage students in activities that are less known and not as easily accessible. This team has come together as a result of the highly successful ski trip to Les Orres that took place last year; a trip that we will be repeating next season, with the hope of encouraging more students to get involved with this exciting sport.”
