The College’s sports teams have continued their incredible form, ending the year with some fantastic results in the sporting arena. Let’s hope 2018 can live up to the fabulous start that everyone has made!
The girls’ netball team competed in two Central Venue League competitions at Paignton Community Sports Academy, remaining undefeated in both, and beating numerous local schools including Teign, Paignton, Kingsbridge and Torquay Academy. Felicity Dunning was chosen as star player for her fantastic defence in the first competition and Frankie Lobb was chosen for her strong attacking skills in the second.
The girls’ football team attended the UEFA Girls’ Football Tournament at Exeter University; a well-attended competition, attracting a host of different opposing school teams. Newton Abbot College played fantastically well, beating Coombeshead 3-1 and drawing 2-2 with Tiverton before being beaten 3-2 by West-Exe. Player of the tournament goes to Shani Pike for her fantastic work rate throughout the competition, consistently putting pressure on her opponents and taking every opportunity on the ball.
The boys’ football team hosted Stoke Damerel for the first round of the Devon Cup. The match proved to be extremely close throughout; however, a cracking goal from Aaron Dodd saw the College claiming a 1-0 victory taking them through to the next round against Torquay Academy.
The girls’ netball team have had a busy start to the season with Central Venue League tournaments and away matches. Their first chance to play on home turf came on Wednesday 22 November, where the girls enjoyed an 8-3 victory against St Cuthbert Mayne School. The girls worked well, battled hard, and should be very proud of their achievement!
The girls’ hockey team’s hard work and commitment to training paid off in their first ever tournament. Playing three games in the first part of the tournament they enjoyed mixed results, winning 2-0 against St Cuthbert Mayne, but losing to Torquay Girls Grammar School and Kingsbridge. Later in the week, the team saw themselves progress and gel together, winning 5 games and drawing one in the second part of the tournament. Captain Harriet Duke put in an incredible performance, scoring an amazing five goals and being nominated for player of the tournament. Other noteworthy performances came from Alex Shefras, who put in a solid performance in goal.
The College’s girls’ U14 futsal team attended the South Devon competition held at Paignton Community Sports Academy. Playing in a round robin competition against 6 other schools from across South Devon, the girls put in an outstanding performance, winning 5 games and drawing only one. The girls finished at the top off the leader board, qualifying for the county round in first place. Player of the tournament went to Ellie Lock for her superb goals throughout the competition.
The boys’ U14 futsal competition was split into 2 groups; Newton Abbot College put in a strong performance starting with a 5-1 win against Brixham followed by another 5-1 win against Torquay Academy. The team lost 2-1 to Paignton but still qualified for the semi-finals. The team secured a 4-3 victory against a strong Cuthbert Mayne side, putting them through to the finals against Torquay Boys Grammar School and qualifying for the county rounds. Man of the match went to Lewis Oldbury; this was his first time representing the College in football and he put in a fantastic performance.
The girls’ hockey team enjoyed their first tournament, putting in a positive performance that saw them draw one game and lose two against much more experienced teams. Ella Medlam was chosen as Star Player due to her incredible work rate and determination in defence, making lots of crucial tackles with perfect timing and technique. Huge well done to all the girls; it is clear the team has huge potential for the future!
