Students Bag Generous Donations for Charity

Volunteer students have been giving up their spare time to help fundraise for the College’s chosen charity for the academic year, Torbay Special Care Baby Unit.

Volunteer students in Years 8, 9 and 10 travelled to Newton Abbot’s ASDA supermarket at the end of May to man the checkouts, providing bag packing services for the local community. Staff and students were amazed at the incredible generosity of local shoppers with an astonishing £954.27 being raised over the two-day period.

The bag packing weekend was just one of a long line of events organised by Newton Abbot College throughout the academic year. The College, whose charitable fundraising has seen substantial donations given to Devon Air Ambulance and Dartmoor Search and Rescue in previous years, will be embarking on a sponsored walk from Newquay to Land’s End at the end of June to raise further funds. All monies donated will help towards the College’s annual fundraising target of £10,000.

Event organiser and Raising Achievement Leader, Sam Groves, was extremely happy with the total: “We, as a College community, are always stunned at the generosity and kindness of the local community. The enormous sum of money raised will make a real and lasting difference to the families using the invaluable services at Torbay Special Care Baby Unit and we couldn’t be prouder to be fundraising for such a worthwhile cause. The strong fundraising ethos at Newton Abbot College meant that volunteers were not hard to find; I would like to thank them all for giving up their spare time and for being such fantastic ambassadors for the College in the wider community.”
