Techbay 2016 inspires design students

techbay-2016-newton-abbot-college-secondary-school-ofsted-goodThe College's Product Design and Design & Technology students travelled to the English Riviera Centre towards the end of last year to attend TechBay 2016 as part of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week. Celebrating the first year of Torbay MADE (Manufacturing Activities Designed to Engage), the project was created to inspire young people and promote the Torbay and South Devon manufacturing industry.  Focussing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), TechBay 2016 was a unique hands-on, interactive experience showcasing the latest technologies, engaging and exciting our next generation of scientists, newton-abbot-college-techbay-2016-ofsted-good-secondary-schoolengineers and hi-tech engineers.  The event was specifically designed to encourage young people who are interested in a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics and gave an insight into both what is available and how interesting the world of engineering can be.  Maire Kemp, Team Leader of Design and Technology at the College, was impressed with the event: “TechBay helped open the eyes of our students to how broad the subject of Design and Technology is and how many career opportunities it can present. The large number of exhibits were interesting and engaging. Students greatly benefitted from the interaction with local companies involved in hugely wide-ranging fields from computer game development to laser guided weapon technology, realising that the Torbay area has a lot to offer in terms of job opportunity and career diversity.”  Year 12 student, Christopher Milner, agreed: “The event as a whole was very beneficial to discovering which pathways I might take in the future.”
