Year 7 students won a 6-a-side football tournament that saw them pitch their footballing wits against neighbouring teams from King Edward VI Community College, Teign School, Coombeshead Academy (A & B Teams) and Teignmouth Community School on 21 January.
The group stages proved no match for the College team; three games in, one clean sheet and not a point dropped saw the College players facing tough competition from King Edward VI Community College in the semi-finals. Despite a great show of play from the Totnes team, Newton Abbot College secured a place in the grand final against Coombeshead A Team. The opposing goal keeper proved incredibly hard to beat; it wasn’t until the half-way point that the College secured a free kick outside the penalty area which was converted into a much needed 1-0 lead. The players battled through the second half, eventually securing the tournament win with a final score of 2-0.
College football coach (and Regional Manager of Arsenal Soccer Schools South West), Mark Titchard, was extremely proud of the result: “The tournament was not only a great success for the College, but was also a great display of team spirit and sportsmanship from all players and schools involved. The determination and character shown by the College’s team, and the passion and professionalism with which they set about their task, was inspiring. I very much look forward to seeing what these talented players have to offer in the future.”
