The College’s Year 9 team beat 17 other teams to become champions at the South Devon Rounders Tournament held at Stover School on 12 June.
Placed in Pool B, the talented players confidently moved through the heat stages without conceding more than three rounders in any one game. Convincing victories against Dartmouth and Kingsbridge schools saw the College scoring 11 and 8.5 rounders respectively. Remaining undefeated after eight matches, the College faced Dawlish College in the semi-finals.
Fielding first, the team performed incredibly well, with Imogen Medlam making some outstanding deep-field catches. At changeover, Dawlish College had only managed to secure one rounder and the College put an end to their championship dreams, scoring an impressive 6 rounders in the second half.
In the final, the girls faced Torquay Girls Grammar, who were also undefeated throughout their heat journey. Batting first, the Torquay team scored an impressive four rounders. In a tense batting final half, Newton Abbot College secured 5 rounders and the championship title.
Physical Education Support Assistant, Chantal Greep, said of the win: “This is the best result our rounders teams have had so far in College history. The girls showed real teamwork and strength of character to take the well-deserved title. We are extremely proud of them and their performance and we are looking forward to continuing this success in the future.”
