Zara Hand-Picked to Help Mental Health Services in the Young

Year 10 Newton Abbot College prefect, Zara Clench, was invited to London on Wednesday 19 April to take part in a series of NHS workshops to help improve mental health services for young people across the country.

Zara, who has previously worked with Devon County Council delivering presentations to social workers on communication and bullying in young people, was hand picked as only one of three representatives from Devon to attend the workshops. Throughout the day, Zara listened to presentations, including one by NHS Director of Personalisation and Choice, James Sanderson, and participated in a number of workshops aimed at finding new ways to reach young people suffering from mental health issues, creating posters and goal-setting.

Zara thoroughly enjoyed the experience: “The day was very informative and interesting and I was extremely privileged to be chosen to take part in such an important project. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the NHS to improve mental health services for young people; my goal in the future is to have a job that helps people and I am so happy I had the opportunity to be a part of this.”

Zara’s Tutor at Newton Abbot College, Rob Wilkinson, was equally as happy: “We are so proud of Zara for her incredible achievement. Being hand selected is testament to the kind of person she is, both in and out of the College environment; caring, passionate and dedicated to helping others. She has a unique opportunity to really affect change in the lives of many young people across the country and we couldn’t be happier for her.”
