Newton Abbot College’s Disability & Special Educational Needs (DSEN) team aims to assist all teaching staff to ensure students with special educational needs and disabilities are successfully and fully included and that they make progress in line with their ability.
We believe that students’ special educational needs can be best met in mainstream classes alongside their peers. All young people have individual needs and an individual approach enhances learning in every classroom.
We emphasise challenge in learning activities and our teachers have high expectations of every student, whilst at the same time giving them the confidence and skills to achieve. We advocate a personalised approach to learning, and adapt our teaching to the different ways students learn.
We recognise that providing effective personalised learning is challenging, not least when a student’s needs appear to present significant barriers to their learning. Our team aims to provide a high quality support service to our staff and students to assist in removing these barriers, enabling all students to become independent, responsible and successful learners whatever their abilities, skills and talents.
Provide support for the successful inclusion of students in learning activities;
- To provide high quality intervention in small groups or on an individual basis for targeted students, monitoring their progress and providing regular feedback to their teachers and parents;
- To assist in the planning and preparation of learning activities to support targeted students in class;
- To liaise with teaching staff to devise clearly structured activities that interest and motivate students to advance their learning.
