Sport

Physical Education plays an integral role in developing students physically, socially and morally. It develops students’ physical competence and confidence and their ability to perform in a range of activities. It promotes the development of physical skills, whilst developing knowledge about the body in action.

Physical Education provides opportunities for students to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges, both as individuals and in groups and teams. It promotes positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles. Physical Education aims to develop students’ interests and abilities in a range of different activities and helps to identify and support sporting stars of the future.

BTEC Sport courses in Physical Education are available as options from Year 9 to 13 for those students who are particularly talented on the practical side, want to consider a future employment in the fast world of sport and enjoy extending their knowledge about the development of skill and how the body works.

Year 7, 8 & 9

In years 7-9 students have two PE lessons a week and these are split into two different strands.
The sports they could do in each strand are:

PE Games
Swimming Football
Water polo Rugby
Cycling Netball
Health related fitness Hockey
Gymnastics Athletics
Dance Volleyball
Lifesaving / water safety Badminton
Ultimate frisbee Rounders
Cricket

Students get at least one half term of swimming in both Year 7 and year 8. We believe that swimming is a vital life skill living in the South West and all students should feel as confident as possible in water, no matter what their ability when they come to us.

Cycling is also included on the curriculum for all students in Year 7-9. Cycling not only improves students’ confidence in bike handling, but also allows for education around bike and road safety.

Year 10 & 11

Students’ lessons are more tailored to specific groups and will access the facilities at the Newton Abbot Leisure centre fitness suite. Students will be fully inducted and introduced to how a gym works and all the different activities they can participate in.

Qualification:

BTEC

BTEC Sport

In Year 9, students can choose to take BTEC Sport as one of their options. This course looks more deeply into the theoretical side of Sport and as a College we consistently get outstanding grades placing us as the top college in SWITSA for our BTEC Sport results.
