At Newton Abbot College we recognise the importance of student leadership and its role in developing our young people into well rounded adults who have a positive impact on the communities in which they live.
Student leadership comes in many different forms at Newton Abbot College. Below is a list of some of the examples with some of the bigger responsibilities explained in more detail.
- Prefects
- Sports captains
- Sports leaders
- Student council
- Arts ambassadors
- Anti-bullying ambassadors
- Subject ambassadors
- Eco council
- Tutor group roles and responsibilities.
- Student helper
Prefects
In year 10 our students go through an application process involving a written, letter and group task to become one of our prefects in year 11. Once prefects they help with major college events such as open evenings and conducting tours. They are also fantastic role models and offer support to our younger college students
Student council
The student council was relaunched in 2022-2023 and has student representatives from all years. The council helps to ensure that the student voice is heard and has helped with some recent whole college policies and procedures. The student council were the driving force behind the positive praise postcards being reinstated.
Sports captains
The college has a large number of successful sports students and one thing that we are very proud of is our sports leaders. From year 7 students have the chance to help and lead primary sports events either at college or at our local feeder primaries. A number of these students in year 10 then apply to be Sports captains who are our figurehead sports leaders running sports clubs, organising and leading competition weeks, as well as leading primary sports events.
Eco Council
Students from year 7 to 13 are welcome to join the Eco Council which meets every half term to lead on NAC’s environmental initiatives. The students consider how they can take positive, meaningful action in combating climate issues and work towards their own goals. Environmental action is also taken in the supporting club ‘Eco-lution’ which runs weekly and is open to all students, including those not on the council.
